Our mission: to carry out basic and applied research on the policies, flows, contents, uses, and appropriations of audiovisual media and messages in the regional context of North America within the context of the processes of cultural and economic integration between Mexico, United States, and Canada.

In the fall semester of 2002, the presidency of the Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM) at Monterrey decided to start a new strategy in the promotion of basic and applied research in the campus based on the establishment of Research Chairs to be appointed to leading scholars in the institute. After an internal and external review and evaluation of the different projects and proposals presented by faculty members, 23 of them were selected. ITESM provides each chair with about 150,000 U.S. dollars per year for a total of about 750,000 U.S. dollars in a period of five years. This amount is directed towards the consolidation of a research group led by the principal researcher, and composed by three professors, three doctoral research assistants, four master research assistants, and four undergraduate assistants. The ITESM Research Chair in Media and Communication was appointed to Dr. José Carlos Lozano, Director of the Center for Communication and Information Research for the period 2003-2007.
